Matthew Wardell was born in 1990, in Southampton (England). Having an interest and passion for the arts he began his artistic journey in 2006, the beginning of 7 years of arts education, ending in 2013, when he graduated from Southampton Solent University with a First-class honours; an academic experience that was to permanently change his practice, and artistic course. Starting out as a painter, Matthew continued to experiment with the creative process throughout these 7 years, and today he can only be described as an interdisciplinary artist: producing photography, video, painting, and works of a multidisciplinary format.
After graduating from Solent University in 2013 he was given the Graduate Artist in Residence Award - a residency in conjunction with Solent Showcase Gallery. Ending in the group show 'Six Degrees Forward'. Matthew was then given a place on Goldsmiths MFA course, where he learnt a great deal about student debt. Having completed the first year, due to financial restrictions he had no choice but to leave the course.
His work has been exhibited in group shows in both Hampshire and London. Recently, an ongoing collaborative project 'Transmembrance' has seen him move from Southampton to Liverpool.
